Plast Nordic and Norner join forces for advanced PET recycling in Nordic region

Kristiansand, Norway

Plast Nordic, the Norner research community and Dr Marianna Sarkissova are now joining forces to develop and scale up a ground-breaking industrial solution. This will enable up to 100% recycling of plastic packaging and polyester textiles. The aim is to establish a full-scale factory in Norway by 2028.

"Plast Nordic has the potential to significantly improve the sustainability of the plastics and textile industry. But the company needs more cutting-edge expertise. Norner has the capacity to contribute with business strategy, polymer science and production technology assessments, which in turn increases the ability to realise this large and important industrial project," says Dr. Kjetil Larsen, CEO of Norner.

The framework for the collaboration has now been signed in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which sets out a strategy for how the companies will jointly contribute to Plast Nordic's strategic and commercial goals.

"We want to contribute to scalable industrial projects where sustainability and business model are well balanced. The combination of chemical recycling of PET, Norner's capacity, Plast Nordic's position and alignment with the well-organised Nordic region appeals to us. We will contribute with strategic and financial resources," says Dr Marianna Sarkissova,

Plast Nordic is now working on qualifying sites for its first factory. The company has looked at a number of relevant sites in both Norway and Denmark. Locations for a Plast Nordic factory must have sufficient access to renewable energy, scalability for growth, access to surplus heat (thermal energy) and good logistics capacity.
