Darmstadt, Germany

Under the central idea of “Design meets Function”, Merck KGaA is presenting solutions for the plastics industries at the international trade fair for plastics K taking place in Düsseldorf from October 27 to November 3, 2010. At Stand F48 in Hall 8a the leading manufacturer of effect pigments will showcase innovations for the processing of plastics. These feature brilliant expressiveness as well as functional applications.Colorstream® Pacific TwinkleThe pigments of the Colorstream® Twinkle series, which was introduced this year, distinguish themselves by flowing color travel effects complemented by a brilliant sparkle. After Colorstream® Royal Twinkle and Luxury Twinkle, a further product has now been added to the series: Colorstream® Pacific Twinkle captures the colors of the sea with its sparkle effect and flowing shades ranging from violet to blue to turquoise. Depending on the formulation, subtle or dramatic effects can be achieved in printing and plastic processing techniques. Also Colorstream® Pacific Twinkle meets FDA requirements and can therefore be used both in food packaging and toys.Iriodin® Icy White Satin and Iriodin® Icy White ShimmerIriodin® Icy White is a brilliant, very pure silver-white pigment based on synthetic mica. Due to its pure silver-white color, it can be used in a wide range of applications, particularly in transparent and brilliant white stylings. The pigment, which was introduced in 2006, is now being joined by two others in a series: Iriodin® Icy White Satin is characterized by a very fine particle size (5 – 25 μm) and thus high hiding power. It is primarily suitable for designs with a delicate silky effect. Iriodin® Icy White Shimmer has a coarser particle size (20 – 180 μm) and produces a stronger glitter effect.Iriodin® 119 WAYWith Iriodin® 119 WAY (weather-resistant anti-yellowing), Merck has developed a silver-white effect pigment especially for exterior applications in the plastics and printing sectors. Due to the pigment’s weather-resistant, anti-yellowing coating, plastic and printed products, in which Iriodin® 119 WAY has been incorporated, are not weakened and do not turn yellow due to weathering or light, and keep a fresh silver-white color.Iriodin Pearlets® and Miraval Pearlets®At the K 2010, Merck is presenting two of its successful families of pigments in a new form for the first time: Iriodin Pearlets® and Miraval Pearlets®. They offer an alternative to single pigment concentrate (SPC), which is needed in a two-step masterbatch process. Through the use of these pigments, masterbatch manufacturers save themselves the work step of SPC production and thus also production capacities, cleaning costs and scrap material. As the pigment concentration is very high, that is, up to 80%, smaller quantities can be used, which in turn leads to cost savings in storage and handling. Last but not least Iriodin Pearlets® and Miraval Pearlets® provide pigments without any damages because they had not been run through an extrusion process yet. This will support the masterbatch industry to supply higher quality effect pigments to end customers.Micabs® C 431 and Micabs® C 411With Micabs® C 431 and Micabs® C 411, Merck is offering two new additives in granulate form for laser marking of plastics. They are free from heavy metals and thus approved for food packaging and toy production. Still, the principle of the Micabs® technology remains unchanged. Micabs® react independently of the surrounding polymer and yield outstanding results in terms of speed, contrast and resolution.
